Frequently asked questions
Gaiwan is an incredibly versatile tool suitable for brewing all types of tea, including Pu-erh, Oolong, Black Tea, Green Tea, and White Tea1. Its neutral material (like porcelain) does not absorb flavors5, allowing you to enjoy the pure taste of each tea without any cross-contamination. It's perfect for exploring the subtle differences between various teas.
Our gaiwans are designed with wide rims to provide a secure and heat-resistant holding surface. The standard technique is the "three-finger method": gently hold the rim between your thumb and middle finger, and place your index finger on the lid knob for balance. Pouring quickly and not overfilling (about 70% capacity) will ensure a comfortable experience.
Tea experts value the gaiwan for its unmatched control and precision. By adjusting the lid's opening, you can finely manage the steeping time and water flow, allowing you to extract the perfect flavor and aroma from your tea leaves. It offers a level of artistry and customization that other teaware often can't match.
For those new to gaiwan, we recommend starting with a medium size (around 120-150ml). Look for a design with a wide, flared rim for comfortable handling and heat resistance. In terms of style, you might appreciate modern minimalist designs, hand-painted artistic patterns, or even sets that blend Eastern and Western aesthetics – choose one that reflects your personal taste and fits your home decor.
The gaiwan is more than just a teapot; it's a symbol of Chinese tea culture and artistry8. Beyond brewing, the lid can be used to aroma the tea leaves ("cover scent”) before drinking. Its elegant design also makes it a beautiful decorative object for your home8. Furthermore, it represents a meditative and mindful approach to enjoying tea, encouraging you to slow down and appreciate the moment.
